Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi on Sunday met newly-appointed BJP president Rajnath Singh in the national capital and it is learnt that lengthy discussion was held on the 2014 general elections.
‘We discussed at length about how the BJP can serve Gujarat under his leadership and how we can improve as a party. Yes, we also discussed 2014 and it was an elaborative discussion,’ said Modi after the meeting. There has already been talk about Gujarat chief minister either heading the campaign committee of the party or being inducted into the parliamentary board of the BJP. Sources, however, indicated the decision on this will only be taken after the national council meet, sometime in February or March. The meeting assumes significance as the two leaders have held a thorny relationship in the past. Singh followed his meeting with Modi with that of Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha Arun Jaitley. The two leaders were closeted for about half an hour. In 2007, when Rajnath Singh was the president of the party, he had dropped both Jaitley and Modi from the central parliamentary board and had also removed the leader of opposition, Rajya Sabha, as the party’s chief spokesperson.
‘The lengthy meeting between Modi and Rajnath Singh is an attempt to show there are no cracks within the BJP,’ said a BJP leader. The leader added in recent times Modi has never held such a long meeting with a central leader that too with the media in the know.
