Uttarakhand in 12 years of its existence has emerged as a major destination for setting up business and industry. While the state all this while was know for being a hub for the educational institutions, in the past few years it has also emerged as a major industrial hub. Well planned and laid out industrial estates developed by the government have contributed immensely to the development of industries in the terai region of the Himalayan state.
However for the development of industrial culture in any state its important that there should exists certain giants who would provide leadership to the industrial community. This role has been effectively played by Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) and Tehri Hydropower Development Corporation India Limited (THDCIL). The BHEL unit in Uttarakhand is located at Ranipur in Haridwar and THDCIL is located across the Bhagirathi valley.
BHEL has two units at Ranipur – Heavy Electrical Equipment Plant (HEEP) and Central Foundry Forge Plant (CFFP).It also has a Pollution Control research Institute, PCRI. The Heavy Electricals Equipment Plant is one of the major manufacturing units of BHEL. The core business of HEEP includes design and manufacture of large size steam and gas turbines, turbo generators, heat exchangers, condensers and auxiliaries. The Central Foundry Forge Plant (CFFP) is engaged in manufacture of large size Castings and Forgings of various types of steels like alloy steels, creep resistant steel and supercritical grade steel. The Pollution Control Research Institute (PCRI) provides services in the field of Environmental Management and Pollution Control in the areas of air, water, noise and solid waste. HEEP & CFFP both have been awarded certificates for Quality Systems (ISO-9001:2008) Environment(ISO-14001) and Occupational Health & Safety (ISO-18001). HEEP is the only Public Sector unit in India to have won the CII-EXIM Bank Prize for Business Excellence (2006).
THDCIL is now a multi project organization with various power projects at different stages of implementation. The Company presently has 15 Projects totaling to an installed capacity of 8770 MW under various stages of development. In addition, a number of Projects are in the business development stage. In addition to the 2400 MW Tehri Hydro Power Complex, THDC is implementing Vishnugad Pipalkoti Hydro Electric Project (444 MW) on river Alaknanda in Uttarakhand. The Project was accorded approval by the Govt. in Aug.’08. VPHEP is a World bank funded Project. The loan agreement has been signed with the World Bank on 10th Aug’ 2011.
Besides this, 5 Hydro Projects totaling to installed capacity of 742 MW are under DPR/Investigation Stages in Bhagirathi, Alaknanda and Sarda Valleys in Uttarakhand. THDCIL is also implementing 24 MW Dhukwan Project on Betwa River in Uttar Pradesh.
