To hang Nithari killer, Meerut jail gets new Manila rope

It is a matter of time before Nithari serial killer Surinder Koli is hanged at the Chaudhary Charan Singh district jail in Meerut. On Saturday, the rope for making the noose arrived from Allahabad’s Naini Jail. According to jail convention, once the hanging rope arrives, the convict has to be executed within 144 hours. Since the rope used in hanging is made from Manila hemp, it’s called Manila rope.

According to SHM Rizvi, Senior Superintendent of CCS district jail, the order for the rope was placed after confirmation for the death penalty was received. Services of the hangman were subsequently also summoned. Pawan, who will carry out the execution is about 30-year-old and was inducted in the jail in 2013. Though, he has never carried out an execution before but his father and grandfather have previously rendered their services to Meerut jail as and when required. As many as 17 hangings have been carried out in Meerut jail since the first execution in 1951.

The designated hangman has already cleaned the hanging area, said jail officials and has also been handed over the rope to prepare the noose. The superintendent further informed that the rope is prepared on a spinning wheel where twenty yarns are mixed and coated with wax to soften it. ‘It is of standard measurement with 60 feet in length and weighs 3.75 kg. Buxar Central jail in Bihar has the expertise in manufacturing the wax-coated Manila ropes, which can withstand the fall of a man with up to 80 kg body weight,’ he added.

The jail officials said that since the rope has arrived, Koli will be hanged before 12 September and would be cremated without the presence of his family members, who disowned him soon after the Nithari serial murder case was solved and Koli found to be the killer. The jail officials informed that Koli, after being shifted from Dasna Jail about three days back, has hardly interacted with anybody. ‘Koli has been kept under CCTV surveillance. Though he is taking proper meal, he hardly gets any sleep during nights. He has neither informed about his last wish nor asked to meet his family members. None of his family members have either contacted,’ said the official.
