TN says Centre soft on K’taka in Cauvery water issue

Since Karnataka is heading for assembly elections in 2013, the central government may not be pushing it hard to release Cauvery water for Tamil Nadu, the Supreme court was told by a counsel Monday.

‘Karnataka elections are there. No direction will be given (to Karnataka to release water to Tamil Nadu),’ Tamil Nadu's senior counsel C.S. Vaidyanathan told the apex court bench of Justice D.K. Jain and Justice Madan B. Lokur. The court is hearing a batch of petitions and application filed by Karnataka and Tamil Nadu on the release of 9,000 cusecs of water daily from Cauvery for the latter.

The Cauvery River Authority headed by the prime minister in an interim award Sep 19 directed Karnataka to release for Tamil Nadu 9,000 cusecs of Cauvery water every day.

KARUNANIDHI APPEALS FOR CALM

Tamil Nadu and Karnataka should step up efforts to check bitterness among the people of the two states over the issue of sharing of Cauvery waters, DMK president M Karunanidhi said Monday amid reports of some violent incidents in the border areas. Karunanidhi asked the two state govts to be alert and take appropriate action to maintain law and order so that Tamils in Karnataka and Kannadigas in Tn are not harmed. Referring to reports of attacks on Tamils living near the border areas reportedly by Karnataka forest officials, Karunanidhi said: ‘The ruling BJP in Karnataka and AIADMK in Tamil Nadu should see to that the bitterness over the issue of sharing of Cauvery waters does not develop into enmity.’
