TN rues K'taka's attitude over power issues

Tamil Nadu government on Thursday said its Karnataka counterpart is not ‘cooperating’ in establishing four hydroelectric power stations along the Cauvery river, while the Centre remains indifferent on the issue.
‘The government had sent proposals for establishing four hydro electric power stations between Sivasamudram in Karnataka and Mettur in Tamil Nadu through National Hydroelectric Power Corporation in 2008 itself. But, Karnataka has not been cooperating and has not given its consent yet.
The Centre is also remaining indifferent to us,’ Electricity Minister Natham R Viswanathan told Assembly, while replying to a query.
‘Because of the Centre’s indifference, we are not getting over 1,150 MW of power,’ he said.
The state had sent proposals to establish four hydroelectric power stations one each in Sivasamudram (270 MW), Meghadhatu (400 MW), Rasimanal (360 MW) and Hogenakkal (120 MW) along the Cauvery through National Hydroelectric Power Corporation on December 15, 2008, he said.
Responding to another query, he said the state government was considering setting up of windmills near the sea, as studies in this regard was in progress by the Centre.
‘Centre for Wind Energy Technology is doing a study on the possibility of establishing windmills in the sea. It would take a couple of years. But, we have requested the Centre to speed up the process,’ he said.
The government would also take action to generate power from tidal waves, since some private parties have expressed interest on this regard, he said.
