Trinamool Congress MPs from West Bengal approached the union transport minister Nitin Gadkari on Wednesday and apprised him of the pathetic state of disrepair of West Bengal’s highways.
‘The minister promised to address the problem. No repair work has been taken up in a long time’, said Trinamool MP Sisir Adhikari.
Another problem that the state is facing is the backlog in payment for the 100 days work scheme by the centre. ‘Bengal ranked topmost in the country in terms of expenditure under the 100-days work in 2013-14. We exceeded our budget and recorded highest-ever expenditure of more than Rs 5,600 crore’, said the Bengal chief minister on her Facebook page.
Despite the achievement, central government has not released its full share of funds to the state government so far. ‘Poor people are not getting their wages. Over Rs 900 crore is pending from the centre’s side and is due to the labour. Who will pay the poor job card holders’, Sisir Adhikari said.
Meanwhile chief minister Mamata Banerjee said, ‘Now there is a hearsay that 100-days work will be run in some select blocks of the country on intensified mode. What would then happen to the poor people of other blocks? Would they be deprived of work?’
