Since morning, thousands of Trinamool Congress supporters and party leaders carrying party flags and pamphlets gathered at Jantar Mantar and raised their voice against the BJP-led government at the Centre for using government mercenaries against Bengal in an attempt to take ‘revenge’.
Earlier, chief minister Mamata Banerjee in her social networking site wrote West Bengal is the first state to protest against the Central government’s unjust decision to curtail the scope of 100 days’ work. ‘Today, I reiterate to fight against the Centre’s decision to restrict the scope of 100 days’ work,’ she said.
Speaking to the Millennium Post, Mukul Roy, TMC’s All India General Seceretary and Rajya Sabha MP, said, ‘We are not going to keep quiet against the BJP-led government for their atrocities against the poor and for failing to deal with communal disharmony in the country.’
Coming down heavily on PM Modi, he said, ‘It’s almost been 120 days for our PM. But they are quiet on the black money issue. It was in their first cabinet meeting that they decided to bring back the black money stashed abroad. Why has the black money not returned to India? We don’t use money power to control the media. We have 46 MPs now. The number will go up in the future.’
The massive rally was organised by party’s young brigade under the leadership of Abhishek Banerjee. ‘We would like to see this protest to flare up in every corner of the country. We have seen in recent times how the CBI is being used politically to stop the ongoing developmental surge in the state. The Opposition has teamed up and unleashed a smear campaign full of slurs and lies,’ he said while addressing the people gathered at Jantar Mantar.
‘Communal violence is alarmingly increasing across the country. Common people are suffering because of the economic policies of the Centre and Bengal is not getting her due funds. To protest against all these issues, we have gathered here in the national capital to raise our concern,’ he added, while adding: ‘From Kolkata our battle has now shifted to Delhi’s Jantar Mantar. We will carry on our protests against the Centre.’
During the protest gathering, Sudip Bandopadhyay, leader of the party in the Lok Sabha, took a dig at BJP president Amit Shah and said, ‘He came to Bengal to ask for votes during Chowringhee by-polls. BJP lost by 15,000 votes. I stand here today and promise you, we will not let BJP come to power in Bengal.’
