TISS scholar from Manipur murdered in S Delhi home

The victim, identified as Kashung Zingran Kengoo, was a PhD student in Sociology from the prestigious Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) in Mumbai. He was living in the rented accommodation for past one month, looking for job and writing articles for academic journals.

Police hasn’t ruled out possibilities of personal enmity and sudden provocation.

However, no clue about the alleged murderer has been found yet. Three months ago, another man from Manipur, identified as Akha Salouni (29), was beaten to death in a road rage incident reported from the same locality.

According to police, Kashung stayed in a single room at the second floor of apartment F27/481 in the narrow Krishna Gali of Kotla Mubarakpur. On Wednesday night, one of his neighbours noticed his door left ajar and a stream of blood coming from it it. On opening the door, he discovered the body lying in a pool of blood and reported the incident to the landlord, who later called up the police around 10.10 pm.

After preliminary investigation, police informed about the incident to the victim’s brother living in Chirag Delhi. ‘When I was taken to Kashung’s room, I saw his body lying on the floor, flat on his back. There was a knife lying on his left and a bowl, with rice scattered around it, on his right. His throat was slit,’ said Yaorei Kengoo, brother of the victim. He further said, ‘Kashung was a very docile person. I even talked to him last week, he was busy writing articles for an academic journal and he mentioned nothing unusual or disturbing during the conversation.’

Kashung’s wallet, mobile phone, laptop and other belongings were lying intact on the bed. ‘So clearly it wasn’t an incident of robbery,’ said a police official. Neighbours, friends and relatives were also interrogated but police was unable to find any clue till evening. Kashung’s apartment was sealed for investigation by forensic experts.

Kashung was not new in the city. He had completed his graduation and post graduation from the University of Delhi, before he moved to Mumbai for his M.Phil and PhD at TISS. After finishing PhD in 2012, he came to Delhi, looking for a job and stayed with his brother at Chirag Delhi for one year. Unable to find a job, we went back to his native place at Ukhrul district of Manipur, said Christopher, brother-in-law of victim.

He further said, ‘Kashung again returned to Delhi in October 2014 and he wanted solitude for finishing his compilation of articles for an academic journal. So he rented the room at Kotla Mubarakpur and decided to live alone, also looking for a job at various universities. He entertained no guests and hardly had any friends.’ A case under section 302(murder) of IPC has been registered against unknown person(s) at the Kotla Mubarakpur police station and the matter is being investigated, said Prem Nath, deputy commissioner of police (South).
