The televison set at Tihar jail had been tuned in to the news channels since early on Friday morning, to get speedy update of the quantum of punishment awarded to the four convicts in the 16 December gang rape case. While most of the prisoners expressed happiness after the death sentence was announced, a few inmates were shocked with the verdict.
'Around 12,000 prisoners are lodged at Tihar jail at present, of which 3,000 are murder accused, 1,200 have been booked for rape and 360 are accused of murder following rape. As the quantum of punishment in the 16 December case was decided on the basis of the murder of the victim, the prisoners are afraid of being awarded capital punishments too,' Sunil Gupta, Tihar spokesperson said. An official on the condition of anonymity said, 'All the prisoners were aware about the heinous crime committed by these rapists, so they wanted capital punishment for them.'
However, the juvenile convicted in the case, who has recently turned 18-year-old and has been given three years stay in the juvenile home, was reportedly in a state of shock after hearing of the death penalty awarded to his partners-in-crime.
