Tihar Jail Factory, located in jail number 2, was set up in the year of 1961 with the objective to engage the prison inmates in productive work. Over the years, there has been manifold growth in the scope and activities of the prison factory.
The jail factory engages approximately 700 inmates, of which 352 are females, divided into various units such as the bakery unit, carpentry unit, weaving unit, tailoring, chemical and house keeping products, handmade paper manufacturing, beauty cultures, nursery training, candle making, jute, pottery and file-making units.
‘The wages of the workers have been divided on the basis of their skills. A skilled inmate earns Rs. 99 per day, while the semi-skilled and unskilled inmates earn Rs. 81 and Rs. 70 per day,' said a jail official.
The bakery unit, which is one of the pop picks among the inmates, operates under the entity of Tihar Baking School, which also includes the spices and petha-manufacturing units.
The products manufactured in the factory are sold under the brand name of ‘TJ's’, throughout the Delhi NCR.
'It is a self sustaining operation as the factories bear the wage expenses and all other running expenses from earnings made from revenue proceeds,' said a jail official.
A blanket-making unit, the latest addition to the factory programme, started operation in the Central Jail number – 9, for manufacturing quality blankets.
