Tihar fight leaves one inmate dead, three severely injured

Scuffle at Tihar jail left one dead and three others injured on Friday, a day after security at the prison was beefed up fearing backlash in the wake of Sarabjit Singh’s death following assault by fellow inmates in Lahore’s Kot Lakhpat Jail.

The incidence has again raised questions over security at the prison, which was recently under the scanner when one of the accused in the 16 December gang rape case committed suicide inside the prison. Fridays clash between two groups of inmates, left one dead and three injured. 'The incidence  occured at Tihar’s jail number one, at approximately 6.30 am in the morning and left 27-year-old Javed, a resident of Seelampur area of north-east Delhi, dead,' said a jail official.

'Two groups with an old rivalry clashed with each other on Friday morning and one of the inmates, Javed, lost his life in the clash. The clash took place when the prisoners were being shifted to another cell by the jail warden ' said Tihar law officer, Sunil Gupta.

Javed had been lodged in Tihar for the past seven years. Gupta said the injured have been admitted to Deen Dayal Upadhayay hospital.

The wounds have been termed serious. Gupta said a thorough probe into the incident has been ordered.

Jail authorities had beefed up security for all 20 Pakistani inmates lodged in Tihar in the wake of Sarabjit Singh’s death after a murderous assault on him by fellow inmates in a Lahore prison.

There are 12 Pakistani prisoners lodged in Tihar presently, six of whom are undertrials. All twelve are accused of terror attacks or drug peddling. Some of the Pakistani prisoners lodged in Tihar include Mohammad Arif, convicted in the Red Fort attack case and Khalid Mehmood, involved in the same case.
