Tibetan delicacies a lure for students in DU

Just at a short distance from main north campus of University of Delhi (DU), the Tibetan camp Majnu-ka-Tila offers mouth-watering delicacies for students at friendly prices. Accompanied by Tibetan music and peaceful aroma that resonates in the camp, Tibetan cuisines can be enjoyed in numerous restaurants around that place.

‘Our delicacies are prepared in true Tibetan style. We have Tibetan pasta (Thenthuk) which is prepared in a soup with vegetables or chicken. Even the raw pasta is made by us. We have buff and chicken sausages. The most popular dish is momos, which varies from steam or fried with veg or non-veg filling. Another popular Tibetan food is Tingmo, a steamed bread which is generally served with either chicken curry or mutton curry or any other such dish. The flat noodles, which are speciality of Tibetan food are served as veg or non- veg dish and itself makes a full meal,’ said Lhakpa, manager at Am-Ma restaurant.

The prices of noodles vary from Rs 90 to Rs 150, the pasta ranges from Rs 110 –Rs 170, the bread cost only Rs 20 and the sausages are for Rs 70-100 and so on. Working for past six years in the restaurant, he said ‘to attract customers, of which majority are students, every week we have recommended dishes and also, keeping in mind the budget, we have combos which are filling and at the same time healthy.’

The camp has been famous amongst students for the affordable prices and also, for it acts as another option for a hang out while enjoying good food.
‘It is a very good place to hang around. I come here often. The restaurants offer meals which just cost Rs 100 per person. Moreover, the Buddhist touch to the place makes it different and interesting,’ said Kusumbar, a student, DU.

Though there are various restaurants, street food is also available. If one stomach still isn’t full, a flavour of Leffing which is generally sold by vendors should be tasted. ‘It is a vegetarian dish which is cooked overnight. It is cooked using flour and filled with vegetables. It just Rs 25 per plate,’ said Tsering, a vendor.
