Despite the a police barricading just a few meters away, a three-year-old girl, Komal, was crushed to death by a speeding XUV500. Not only that, police failed to nab the accused as well.
The incident took place in Mansarovar Park area of north-east Delhi on Sunday morning, around 12.10 pm. The girl, identified as Komal, was a resident of Mansarovar Park.
She was playing with some other children on the roadside in D-block when a toy fell on the ground. The moment she approached to pick it up, a speeding car crushed her to death.
Soon after the incident, the errant driver, Deepak, in his late twenties, rushed her to nearby hospital, where doctors declared her dead on arrival.
‘Deepak told the doctors that he was just an eye-witness in the case. He said he was going to inform the parents of the victim, and then he fled from there,’ said a source in the hospital.
According to Ishant (name changed), an eye-witness who runs an electric shop in front of the crime spot, ‘It was purely Deepak’s fault, as he was turning the car at a high speed. He was unable to see the child. Before anybody could react, he had driven away with the girl. Then I made a call to police control room.’
The victim was the only child in the family. Panna Lal, her father, works in a private firm as a clerk. He said, ‘We want an immediate action against the accused.’
Residents of the area then gathered around and damaged Deepak’s property. He is well-known builder in the area. ‘The police present on the spot stopped the protesters,’ an eye-witness said.
When a senior official was contacted, he said, ‘We have registered a case of rash and negligent driving causing death against the accused at Mansarovar Park police station.’ When the official was asked why the case was not registered by the name of the accused, he refused to comment.
According to sources, the family of the victim was being pressurised to compromise. But they have decided to pursue the case.
ONE KILLED, ONE HURT IN MISHAP
