Three NE states to hold elections in February

Announcing the assembly election schedule for three north-eastern states, the Election Commission of India on Friday said the announcement will have no bearing on the presentation of Union Budget. Chief election commissioner VS Sampath said government will have to seek its permission before making major announcements when the Model Code of Conduct is in force.
According to the schedule, Tripura will go to polls on 14 February while Meghalaya and Nagaland on February 23. Results will be declared on 8 February. EC also announced bye-elections to nine assembly constituencies in Mizoram, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal and Punjab on 23 February and in Assam, Bihar and Maharashtra on 24 February, but their results will be out together on 28 February. The notification for Tripura polls will be issued on 21 January and for Meghalaya and Nagaland on 30 January. All the three state assemblies have 60 seats each.
