Three killed as building collapses at Sadar Bazar

Three people were killed and 12 others injured when a three-storey building, under construction, collapsed in north Delhi’s Sadar Bazar area on Sunday afternoon. According to police the incident took place around 12.30 pm. Three bodies, all males, were recovered from the debris. Meanwhile Delhi government  has announced a compensation of Rs two lakh each for those who died in the three-storey under-construction building collapse in Sadar Bazar area here this afternoon.

‘Three people were killed and 12 were injured when an under-construction multi-storey building collapsed in Sadar Bazar’s Gali Barna area. While two bodies were pulled out of the rubble, another man died on the way to the hospital’, said a senior police official.

‘Operations to remove the debris are on. Some more people may be trapped in the debris,’ the official said. The deceased were in their late 20’s and are believed to be labourers at the construction site. According to the Delhi Fire Service, three excavator machines were rushed to the spot to remove the debris and rescue those people who were trapped. According to the Delhi Fire Service officials, ‘We received a call by them at around 12:55 pm, after which five fire tenders were rushed to the spot. Three JCB machines were also sent to the spot to remove debris, while rescue operations were simultaneously underway’.

‘The victims -- identified as Babu Paswan, 25, Natwar Lal, 50, and his son Ashok, 25 -- were labourers’, a police official said. The injured have been admitted to the Sushruta Trauma Centre at Hindu Rao Hospital and Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital.

‘One of the injured is stated to be critical,’ the police officer said. He said that construction work was happening on the second and third floors. As a consequence of Sunday’s events,  North Delhi Municipal Corporation commissioner Praveen Gupta said, ‘Ex Engineer, Assistant Engineer and Junior Engineer (JE) have been suspended with immediate effect. An FIR will be lodged against owner and contractor of the building. An inquiry has been ordered. Additional commissioner(Engineer) will submit his report in seven days’. The commissioner directed all deputy commissioners to not tolerate any unauthorised construction.
