This is not a village road

For the last eight months, residents and commuters at Julana chowk in New Friends Colony have been jostling with filth and traffic jams, as some civic work is being delayed. The spot is just a stone’s throw away from the Holy Family Hospital and Escorts.

In fact, when the local councillor was contacted, she said the situation at the intersection can’t be changed as there are still two months to go and the  construction work started just a ‘week ago’.

Indu Singh, the councilor said, ‘The work of the installation of trunk sewage started a week ago and it will take around 2-3 more months.’

Residents, however, questioned that  if the work started a week ago, what had been happening for the last eight months.

‘The situation is same for the last eight months. We don’t understand what is happening. They install boards of Delhi Jal Board (DJB), work for a few days and disappear for days together,’ Mohammed Raza Khan, a shopkeeper, said.

This negligence has resulted in water logging, due to improper drainage system of the residential areas nearby. The drain water and all the filth has covered almost half of the road and left the turn for Jamia university is closed.

‘It is very difficult for us to commute in the area due to the marshy spots that have been created. The drain water overflows and it stinks. I have now started avoiding the area and take a longer route,’ said Javed Khan, a regular commuter.

There have been many complaints of road accidents due to this problem. People sometimes simply slip on the road. Bike accidents are rising in number, as the area is on the main traffic intersection.

Manholes are open, which is dangerous for the people, especially during monsoon. ‘This issue was left unnoticed for a long time even after various complains. This important road intersection needs to be fixed soon,’ another resident said.
