Thieves rob employee of Gambhir’s dad, flee with Rs 43L

Two unidentified men on a motorcycle allegedly robbed an employee of Gautam Gambhir’s father. Rs 43 lakh, consisting of Rs 6 lakh in cash and Rs 37 lakh in draft cheques were stolen. The perpetrators allegedly thrashed him as well. He was coming back to the office in Gandhi Nagar Market on Sunday evening when the incident occurred. “Police are scanning CCTV footage from nearby shops to establish the identity of the accused,” said senior officers of the East district.

Police say the incident was reported to them at around 5.40 pm when the employee, identified as Shyam Dev Tiwari was returning on foot after collecting payments. Gautam Gambhir’s father, Deepak Gambhir runs a textile shop ‘Yogesh Trading’ in Gandhi Nagar.

According to the investigating officer, Tiwari told the police that two men on a motorcycle approached him while he was going back to his office.

“The perpetrators tried to snatch the bag full of cash by using force. When Tiwari resisted, they got down and thrashed him, after which the accused fled the spot,” said  the police officer. Sources say the incident took place right behind the police station. Tiwari informed his employer, Gambhir, who in turn informed the police.

“Prima facie, we are probing to assess the possibility of an insider. We are looking at all angles to solve the case at the earliest,” said an officer.

“A case under the relevant sections of robbery has been registered at the Gandhi Nagar police station against the unknown perpetrators. An investigation is underway,” said the senior officer.
