Tell us about your band. How did you start off?
Normally you have a party with your friends, and they invite some of their friends and that’s it. LMFAO was our party, and we invited the whole world to it. There was always that dream to make it big, and our first few years playing around clubs and doing radio shows in LA, with the response we got, it had us believe in that dream even more. But right now, LMFAO is status hiatus and taking a chill pill for the moment.
What was the first big break for you?
While we were on our way to making it big, in 2010 my good friend David Guetta featured us in his hit single Getting Over You and bam! the party scene was changed forever.
How would you define your musical philosophy?
I have my fun songs that make people laugh and music that's sometimes edgier. But also there are songs like Shine and Imagination on my record that focus on my philosophical side and show how I feel about the world and how I view success and things like that, which I’m really into as well, but not many people have seen that side of me. It felt good to stretch my range of songs. I want people to know there’s more to Sky Blu than just being the Party President.
In your country, how easy (or difficult) is it to make a mark in the music scene? What do you think the main issues are?
In America, you never know who makes it big. In the music industry, confidence on your talent and belief in yourself is all that’s required to make a mark. You should stay true to your music. You should be your music. And a lot of Artists seem to forget about that. For some, it’s just about the popularity or reaching number 1! What’s the point if you sing someone else’s words?
Tell us a bit about your music, what do you think defines you?
I just want people in the world to know that Sky Blu is coming, and I’m going to make a big impact. I really wanted to get people to take a good look at the diversity I can provide as an artist. Working individually has given me the space to make music the only way I can hear it – My way! I’ve been making music for a long time. After a while you start looking at all this music and saying, ‘Wow, this is really a piece of me. How am I going to be able to wrap this up and give it to the world in the best way?’ It’s always a constant struggle of creating things and figuring out how we’re going to get them to the people. The music is definitely going to be different. I want to win Grammys as a solo artist… and a lot of them! When you make music – especially if you love what you do – you just make music and it just happens.
What/Who inspires you?
Since I was a little kid, I actually was around people like Michael Jackson and Stevie Wonder, all of these amazing people. So you know from all of these great songwriters, to all of these artists even Rick James, they really left an impression on me. I think just really watching and listening has helped me find out who I am. My fans inspire me the most. When you hear them sing along to your songs, that’s one feeling nobody can beat. For me, music has the ultimate power to change one’s mood so I like to listen to what makes me happy and I try and do the same with my music too.
Tell us about your best tracks
Go On Girl and Shine are two of my best tracks from the Party President. Both are different from the other, Go On Girl is my first single, and it’s only going to help you party harder. And Imagination is a door way to my inner most thoughts and feelings.
What songs top your playlist right now?
The five songs topping the list would be - Shots, Champagne Showers, I Want To Party, Get Outta Your Mind, Go On Girl.
What suggestions/advice would you have for newbies in music?
Be true to yourself. Make music the way you see and feel it. It’s not about the masses. Once you start believing in yourself and following your heart, the masses soon start following you.
How has Delhi been for you and what have you planned for us?
I’m planning on making India my own party planet. EDM and pop culture has grown humongously here. I have never been to India but I expect to have the best show of my life… until the next show! I’m a very big fan of the culture, the traditions and the spicy food. I’m very excited to be performing in India, I've always wanted to visit India and I am excited to try and find some time to go sightseeing around the country with my promoter, Saurabh Choudhary. I plan to take the country of India and through my performances there and music, generate enough electromagnetic connectivity to where the whole mass of land rises up and orbits the sun upon its own terms. Party President baby! 2014!
