The Axe effect

The CPB is the highest decision making body of the ruling party. The party’s top panels are being reshaped following the elevation of prime minister Narendra Modi’s confidant Amit Shah as party president. The three veterans have been replaced by Madhya Pradesh chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan and party general secretary Jagat Prakash Nadda.

The decision marks a complete generational shift in the BJP camp from the old guard to new leaders. Party leaders claimed that time has changed and the country needs new thought to rebuild the nation. ‘Therefore, young leaders should be given an opportunity to think out of the box rather than sticking with old policies,’ BJP sources said.

Sensing criticism from the opposition parties and the masses, especially the followers of these leaders, Shah has accommodated an ailing Vajpayee along with Advani and Joshi in the new five-member mentor group christened ‘margdarshak mandal’. The other members in the mentor group are former president Rajnath Singh and prime minister Modi himself.

Party insiders claimed they were not accommodated in the government and now have been eased out of the party for having spoken against the new leadership in the months before the Lok Sabha election.

‘Advaniji has paid the price for raising questions on whether Modi should be projected as the party’s PM candidate or not,’ the source said. In the context of Joshi and Vajpayee, he said, ‘Joshi paid the price for throwing tantrums when he was asked to give up the Varanasi seat for Modi during the Lok Sabha election. Later, he bowed to pressure and gave up the seat from where Modi won comfortably.
Vajpayee ji’s health issue forced the party leadership to shift him to the margdarshak mandal.’
On the role of margdarshak mandal, party spokesperson Shahnawaz Hussain said, ‘They will show the way to the party in rebuilding the nation.’

The party’s Parliamentary Board now has three-time Madhya Pradesh chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, party general secretary Jagat Prakash Nadda along with Modi, Rajnath Singh, Arun Jaitley, Sushma Swaraj, Venkaiah Naidu, Nitin Gadkari, Ananth Kumar, Thawarchand Gehlot and Ramlal.

The party has also announced the names of reconstituted Central Election Committee (CEC), which is empowered to decide candidates to be fielded in elections. Those who have been inducted in the CEC are Modi, Shah, Jaitley, Rajnath Singh, Swaraj, Naidu, Nitin Gadkari, Anant Kumar, Gehlot, Chouhan, Nadda, Ramlal, Jual Oram, Shahnawaz Hussain and Vijaya Rahatkar.
