Thane building collapses after heavy rains, none injured

A three-storey vacant building collapsed on Monday in the powerloom town of Bhiwandi here after heavy rains lashed the district inundating and cutting off several low-lying areas.
According to chief of Thane District Disaster Control, Jaideep Visawe, the building came down crashing around 4 am in the Padma Nagar locality. There was no loss of life as 75 people residing in the building had been evacuated recently, he said.
A portion of this building had come down a couple of days ago following which fire officials evacuated the occupants.
The city received a total of 139 mm rainfall till 6 am since Sunday, throwing normal life out of gear, Disaster Control officer Santosh Kadam said. Also, there were two incidents of wall and slab crash on a drain due to incessant showers in the town.
Continuous rains and flash floods cut-off some remote areas in the district, leaving thousands marooned.
Reports reaching district headquarters said the river at Maswan in Manor (Palghar) was overflowing as a result of which the bridge was totally submerged under water.
