Thai delegates visit India to boost trade, connectivity

According to sources, apart from assisting India in defence technology, delegates will also sign an
agreement on the co-production of items to promote trade between the two countries.

It is expected that the high-power business delegation from Thailand’s logistics sector, Department of Business Development and Ministry of Commerce will meet union ministers, including Manohar Parrikar (defence), Arun Jaitley (finance) and Rajnath Singh (home).

The Thai delegates will discuss business opportunities and marketing in different areas by creating business relations, involving local businessmen, studying the systems of logistics and goods transportation in both the countries.

“Special attention will be laid to improve road and sea connectivity on both sides of the border to boost trade. The delegation is also likely to visit Kohima and Imphal to discuss issues of border trade, connectivity and logistics management,” government sources said.

The delegation’s visit comes after Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s meeting with his Thai counterpart Gen Prayut Chan-o-Cha in November 2014 at 12th ASEAN-India summit, where the leaders had pitched for mutual assistance in driving the economy of their countries.

It was then that Prayut had promised to send a team of delegates to India to explore the possibility of co-production in various sectors. Also, Prayut praised India’s ‘Act East’ policy, saying it is important for the 10-member southeast nations group.

“I agree and admire the concept of the ‘Make in India’ campaign. It can drive the economy. Thailand can apply it for its economy too,” the Prime Minister’s Twitter handle quoted the Thai Premier as having told him.

Bilateral trade between Indian and Thailand has multiplied eight times since 2000 to reach $8.68 billion in 2012. In January-February 2013, the bilateral trade was pegged at $1.68 billion and it is expected to increase this year.
