Tempers run high as BJP, Cong indulge in scuffle

Pandemonium, scuffle and abuses and every such act that shames Parliamentary democracy took place inside a North Delhi Municipal Corporation (North MCD) session on Friday, courtesy BJP and Congress councillors. Even Mayor Yogendra Chandolia and the Leader of Opposition (LoP) Mukesh Goel refused to forgive each other.
The Congress and the BJP members in the House not only hurled abuses at each other but also attempted to indulge in fist-fighting forcing adjournment for an indefinite period. Both the groups were fighting over the issue of ‘conversion charge’, a money charged by the local body for commercial use of property.
The situation went worse when Chandolia and Goel instead of restraining their party members themselves abused each other and vowed to take each other outside the premises. Both the parties also decided to complain the matter before higher authorities.
The Congress councillors were opposing the collection of ‘conversion charge’ in special zone-City zone, Sadar zone and Civil Lines zone by the MCD. They alleged that the BJP had announced to waive off the tax during Assembly elections campaign but is now refusing to do so. In the meantime, Congress’ Satbir Sharma, raised the issue of old age pension. Sharma alleged that the delay in disbursement of the pension money is being done with the motive of taking “revenge from the people who rejected” the BJP during the February 7 polls.
Sharma, while raising the issue aggressively, moved towards the Mayor. When the BJP members tried to pacify, he allegedly started abusing them. As Sharma dared to take on Chandolia, he also retaliated threatening to take revenge outside the premises. With the situation deteriorating, few participants mainly senior bureaucrats took the councillors away from the scene and the House was adjourned for 15 minutes.
