Teething trouble? DU teachers meet VC on biometric attendance

A 13-member delegation met Delhi University (DU) vice-chancellor Dinesh Singh to apprise him of the possible negative effects of the proposed biometric attendance register system for the teaching faculty.

DU Executive Council member Aditya Narayan Mishra said that the delegation informed the vice-chancellor that the biometric system would lead to a mechanisation of university life and will be used to settle personal scores by university officials.

‘The delegation also impressed upon the vice-chancellor that the teaching –learning process  should be given supreme significance, especially in the light of two judgments of High Court which have made submission of monthly attendance records of students mandatory and the teaching community has duly complied with it,’ Mishra said.

On the outcome of the meeting, DU Academic Council member Rajesh Jha said, ‘The vice-chancellor has given categorical assurance to look into the matter of biometric attendance for teachers and assured the delegation that the measure of putting monthly attendance in public domain is quite transparent and effective.’
