Teenager moves court against parents

A Jharkhand girl, living in Delhi to pursue study against the wishes of her parents, has approached the Delhi High Court seeking police protection.

The 19-year-girl alleged in her petition that she wanted to pursue further studies after having completed class XII last year but her parents were not allowing her to pursue further studies.
Before hearing her petition, Justice Vipin Sanghi summoned her elder brother, who is staying in Delhi, to know how she has been staying alone in the city since May 2011, against the wish of her parents and posted the matter for hearing on 18 June.

The court passed the order after the girl, hailing from Ramgarh district, told it that she has been staying as a Paying Guest in Mukherjee Nagar and preparing for banking examinations.

Girl's counsel told the court that his client wanted to study further after she had completed class-XII but her parents pressurised her to get married at the instance of some relatives. He told the court that the girl had left the house in May last year to pursue further studies, however, her parents had lodged a missing report with the Patratu Police Station in Jharkhand.

‘The petitioner is a major and has every right to live at any place of her choice and this right was conferred to her by the Constitution. She wanted to pursue her studies here but her parents were not allowing her and insisting on her getting married,’ the petitioner said seeking an order restraining the police from harassing her.

She said in her petition that she was harassed by the police in active connivance with the parents and relatives and police have not taken any step to protect her from the hands of parents. The girl also said that her brother-in-law, who is staying in Jharkhand, has been financially helping her and the parents have lodged a kidnapping case against him.
