Flashes of Bruce Willis starer Hollywood thriller Die Hard IV will come into your mind when you hear the story of this 35-year-old techie who was apprehended and charged for allegedly hacking into the IT infrastructure of the Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi exactly a year ago.
The Central Bureau of Investigations [CBI] says that the accused Gurucharan Kalluraya was disgruntled by the attitude of his employers, who were contracted by the airport to manage the servers. 'He had played an important role in setting up the system. However, he reportedly didn't get credit and was even asked to leave the company. He felt bad about this and decided to take revenge,' the CBI sources said.
The CBI, which is probing the case, said that Kalluraya is a former employee of ARINC India Private Limited in Gurgaon. The CBI sources said, 'During investigation, it was revealed that the accused accessed the airport servers by exploiting the remote access option available to system engineers of the company. He was found to have written the a malicious script and introduced it in the servers.'
In June 2011, it was alleged that the common use passenger processing system and baggage reconciliation system at Terminal 3 of the airport were rendered unavailable on 29 June 2011. Due to such system outage, the check-in system at the terminal was unavailable, which led to several delays in the flights by various airlines.
'Searches were carried out at the residence of Kalluraya and other places. During searches, laptop, data card using which the accesses were made, cyber cafe records, including the hard disks of the systems and register, etc. were also confiscated. Foreign examination of the articles and analysis of the server logs revealed that the script was present on the pen drive and the laptop of the accused and the remnants of the remote connection established have been recovered,' the source added.
Kalluraya is a trained engineer in computer applications and lives with his mother and sister.
