In a unique use of special effects through information technology, cyber security officers in Mumbai frightened a group of thieves stealing money from an ATM machine located in Greater Noida. The security officers recreated ghostly sounds through speakers installed in the booth, which frightened the thieves to the extent that they put the money back in place before scooting.
“Though the theft was attempted, it was foiled by the bank staff sitting in another city. We have taken cognizance of the case but have not registered an FIR. Generally police register a case after receiving a complaint, but here no complaint has been received so far. If a complaint is received, we will initiate an investigation,” said Sanjay Kumar Yadav, Superintendent of Police (Rural), Greater Noida.
As per the report, the incident took place around 3.15 am on Tuesday in a commercial belt of Alpha Sector when two robbers entered an ATM booth of Standard Chartered Bank by unlocking its gate. The robbers then destroyed a CCTV camera installed near the gate and covered it with paper but failed to notice two other cameras installed behind the machine. They broke the ATM machine with the help of a <g data-gr-id="55" style="color: #3b3b3b; font-size: 11px; background-color: white;">rod</g> and took out the cash.
As the ATM booth was linked to the central control room and was being monitored by officers online, activity inside the premises raised suspicions. The officers, through two-way communication, produced scary sounds that led to the impression of the booth being haunted. The officers succeeded in scaring the robbers through their unique style of communication and foiled the theft.
The police official of the concerned area informed that the robbers, after hearing the noises, put the money back in the cash <g data-gr-id="62">box,</g> and reassembled the parts of the ATM machine before fleeing. Early in the morning, when a bank official reached the spot, the matter was reported. Notably, the city, which mainly comprises rural clusters, witnesses frequent ATM machine break-ins but this was the first case when an attempt was foiled with the help of technology.
