Team Mamata leaves for Singapore, fresh investments expected

On her first trip to a foreign country since she became the chief minister of Bengal in 2011, Mamata is scheduled to meet the prime minister and the foreign minister of Singapore as well as key industrialists during her visit. The meeting with the Singapore PM Lee Hsein Loong is likely to be held on the 19th of this month. ‘Investment from the Changi group is already underway for the upcoming airport city at Andal near Kolkata. Work is ready except for the removal of some high tension power grid lines which are coming in the way. But we are also hoping for other investments from Singapore,’ Trinamool MP Sisir Adhikari told Millennium Post.

The team comprises about 13 representatives of the state government like Industry minister Amit Mitra, chief secretary Sanjay Mitra and industrialists like Harsh Neotia, Sanjay Budhia and Sanjeev Goenka. Trinamool MP Dev is also in the team. Information technology is a key area in which the state government will tap Singapore. Industry experts said that with Singapore becoming one of the world’s most expensive cities, many IT companies are possibly looking at relocating some functions to India. Kolkata hopes to grab a share of that. ‘IT and communication are Singapore’s strong points.

We are hopeful about investments in these segments,’ Trinamool MP Sougata Roy said.
The team is likely to check out Japanese manufacturing giants like Sumitomo, Mitsui and Panasonic that have made Singapore the headquarters of their Asia-Pacific operations. Banerjee is also likely to meet key personnel of leading global financial institutions and private equity firms. Singapore, now the Asian hub of many such institutions, can offer foreign direct investment in key projects in Bengal.

A visit to Sentosa Amusement Park is also part of  Banerjee’s itinerary. Universal Studios, Singapore, is part of Sentosa which attracts tourists across the globe and is the replica of Universal Studios in the US. Banerjee is scheduled to return on Friday.
