Teachers to spend more time in city schools

In order to promote extra-curricular activities as suggested under the Right to Education Act, the Directorate of Education (DoE) has slightly increased working hours for teachers in schools.

Now the teachers of government aided and unaided schools have to work for an additional nine hours every week as DoE has made working 45 hours a week from existing 36 hours mandatory for the teaching staff. However, the increased time schedule will not affect the students.

Padmini Singla, Directorate of Education said, ‘As per the Right to Education Act, we have increased teachers’ working hours per week to 45 hours against 36 hours a week.’ According to the order, teachers of single shift schools have to work from 7.15 am to 2.45 pm.

Earlier, the school timing was 7.30 am to 1.30 pm. Similar changes have been made in the evening shift schools as well.

Officials said that teachers are expected to use the extra hours for developing a framework of extra-curricular activities.
