Tall claims: ABVP hopes to win all four posts in DU

The forthcoming Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU) elections have surely become the buzz in the campus. While Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) claims that it will sweep all four posts this time, the upcoming competitor All India Students’ Association (AISA) says that they shouldn’t be taken too lightly. However, both the parties feel that NSUI is not a threat in this election season.

‘We are getting very good response from students. In which ever college we visit, students welcome us with garlands and discuss their problems and issues. They are showing immense faith in us. We will win all the four posts this time. We have broad student support behind us,’ said Rohit Chahal, national secretary, ABVP.

He further added that their traditional competitor National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) does not seem to be a threat at all this time.

The new player, All India Students’ Association (AISA) says ABVP might get a shock this time.

‘We are getting a very good response from the students. They have seen us working sincerely and restored faith in us. Moreover, they are disgusted by the money and muscle power politics in the university. We might not be in poster war like NSUI and ABVP but that doesn’t mean that we are not in the race. We are following all the rules and fighting the elections unlike other parties who are openly flouting recommendations of the Lyngdoh Committee. Also, they use caste polarization to win votes. Their campaigns are not aggressive. NSUI, which doesn’t appear to be strong enough this time, is banking on votes based on same tactics,’ said Sunny Kumar , Delhi State Secretary, AISA.

While both ABVP and AISA say they have good chances, NSUI national president Roji M John added: ‘There are only two competitors this year — ABVP and NSUI. AISA has limited strength and presence in the university and we don’t even consider them as a challenge.’
