Taking art to the masses

Art has always been about expressing oneself. And when it comes to the women in Delhi, art has been about baring one’s soul and communicating with people at large.

On this note, Sharing Experiences by Women in the Arts was a platform where eminent contemporary women artists like Arpana Caur, Mithu Sen and Anjolie got together to share their views on how they can take art to the masses. This panel discussion was organised on Monday by FICCI.

Arpana Caur, a contemporary Indian artist has been exhibiting her art across the globe since 1974.

Her message is firm, art cannot exist on its own but to sustain art one needs to reach out to the masses.

‘It is through the  balance of nature with industry, art with commerce, Western concept with Indian roots that one can reach out to the people at large’, says Caur.

Mithu Sen, also a contemporary artist from Bengal, believes art to be a kind of communication.

‘Life is a constant the struggle between the self and the other self and I wouldn’t my live with any false notion or identity but challenge the other self inherently,’ said Sen.

Thereafter, Anjolie Ela Menon took up the dias. She remarked that art was a selfish activity and in it is about expressing one’s heart and soul. Although Menon proclaimed that she wasn’t trying to communicate to people through her work but somewhere, it had connected to people.

She also believed that art was not just about making beautiful pictures but it was about developing and refining the taste for an art.

There was a recurring concern among the participants to understand art and how to develop a taste for it. Somewhere it was about reaching out to the masses and appreciate art more than just a beautiful sight.

The discussion was also attended by who’s who from the capital’s art circuit. The President of FLO,  Kavitha Varadaraj said: ‘A growing interest in arts and crafts has opened up a plethora of business opportunities if one has the passion for it. This is especially true for the business of art and at FLO we provide an excellent platform for the art lovers to learn straight from the experience of the stalwarts in this field.’
