Taken to task: 49 police personnel transferred

Forty nine personnel of Nand Nagri police station of North East Delhi have been transferred to the third battalion of the force for allegedly giving a free hand to betting syndicates and other illegal activities in their area, police said on Saturday.

A vigilance inquiry against the 49 officers including the former station house officer of Nand Nagri police station has been ordered.

The policemen have been charged with dereliction of duty.  ‘We wanted to set an example that dereliction in duty will not be tolerated. 49 policemen of different ranks posted at Nand Nagri Police station have been transferred to the third battalion after a vigilance inquiry was initiated against them following complaints received from the public,’ said Sanjay Beniwal, joint commissioner of police, eastern range.

‘The police investigation was delayed on account of preparations of the assembly and Lok Sabha election though the complaint came a few months back. We have now constituted a team to find out their roles. All the police personnel including, Devender, the former station house officer of the police station were not able to curb betting rackets which were run freely in the area,’ he said.

‘Five months earlier, we received a complaint about several betting syndicates being run with the active help of the local police in some parts of Nand Nagari. During the course of investigation, we found the involvement that these officers were involved in running the syndicates. Now a vigilance inquiry is being conducted against Devendra and the 48 other police personnel,’ added Beniwal.

This is the second such action in less than one week by Delhi Police top brass.

On Tuesday, Station House Officer (SHO) of Mandawali police station was sent to the district police lines for allegedly patronizing gamblers involved in betting racket.

Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) of Madhu Vihar was also transferred in this connection.
