Take lesson from rape incident: Sheila

Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit on Thursday exhorted the society to take a lesson from the heinous Delhi gang rape incident.

She described it as a ‘Warning Bell’ for the society and requested one and all to bring a positive change in society in order to ensure security, safety and dignity of women.

While expressing deep concern over the declining sex ratio, Dikshit stated that the incident of female foeticide are becoming more common in affluent society. ‘It has been noticed that in one of the neighbouring states, the families are forced to bring their daughter-in-laws from far off states and even from other countries as the sex ratio has touched the lowest which is alarming for the entire humanity. We all are responsible for this state-of-affair as desire for having a son in the family is becoming more and more forceful resulting in neglect to the needs of girl child,’ she said.

Dikshit further stated that inauguration of an Integrated Skill Training Centre for Girls at Village Neb Sarai, Freedom Fighters’ Colony would go a long way in making the girls well-trained and self-sufficient. The Centre which has been made operational by the Sun Foundation under an ongoing Scheme of Department of Women & Child Development would offer 12 training courses with one-year diploma for free. Delhi WCD minister Kiran Walia, local MLA Balram Tanwar, secretary (WCD) Narendra Kumar, Major Ved Prakash and chairman, Sun Foundation Vikramjit Singh Sahney were present on the dais.

Speaking on this occasion, Kiran Walia stated that there is a need to hang the mentality of neglecting and assaulting women. This is the lesson which one could feel and implement in the society.

She expressed satisfaction that Integrated Skill Training Centre has been inaugurated on the occasion of National Girl Child Day. On this very day in 1966 the greatest women leader late Indira Gandhi took over as the prime minister of the country for the first time.

Walia added that her department has been focusing on imparting quality education to the girls. The girls have been outscoring boys in all board results. There has been no drop-out in Delhi Government schools and 50 per cent of students are girls. The government has implemented Laadli Scheme to enhance enrolment and give dignity to girl child. She expressed concern over declining sex ratio.
