Swine flu: Three more reported dead

“A 69-year-old male, who was suffering from blood cancer died on Thursday at Dr B L Kapur Memorial hospital. Also, a 51-year-old man suffering from heart disease succumbed to the flu at Sri Balaji Action Medical Institute,” said S K Sharma, director of Directorate of Health Services.

Besides, a 23-year-old pregnant woman, who was infected with swine flu after getting admitted to a city hospital during her pregnancy, also died, an official said, on Friday. “The woman, a resident of Krishna Nagar in East Delhi, was admitted to the LNJP Hospital on February 5, and succumbed to the disease on February 12. The death was reported due to lack of coordination between the hospital and the Directorate of Health Services,” said Siddarth Ramji, medical superintendent, LNJP hospital.

Meanwhile, with reports of the Ghaziabad district magistrate, Vimal Kumar Sharma being admitted in an isolated ward in a private hospital with the flu, the health department on Friday, said that they are taking all possible measures to ensure proper treatment. However, the Chief Medical Officer (CMO), Dr Ajay Aggarwal said that from January 1, only one casualty has been reported due to swine flu in Ghaziabad.

The Ghaziabad administrative officials said that the hospitals are well equipped to deal with the disease and that people “should not panic.”

“The Tamiflu medicine is available at the government hospitals and two designated private hospitals in the district,” said an official, adding that the situation is being monitored continuously.

The hospital authority has also advised the family members of the DM and other officials for safety precautions as he was in regular contact with these people. It is suspected that Sharma might have contracted the disease after meeting the husband of Shubra Saxena, the DM of Shahjahanpur.

Saxena is currently undergoing treatment for swine flu in a Delhi hospital. Another possibility is that he might have contracted the disease when he attended an IAS officers’ meeting in Lucknow, because he had been unwell since his return on February 14. Apart from this, out of 908 cases tested for swine flu, 143 have been found positive for the flu. Symptoms of swine flu include cough, cold, cough, sore throat, fever, body aches, headache, chills and fatigue.
