Swine flu claims one more

The total number of swine flu deaths in the capital has reached five 5 with the death of 27-year-old Om Prakash in the Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital on Thursday. The patient died to due to multiple organ failure.

In addition to this, 37 new swine flu cases have been detected in the capital, which took the number cases to a total of 243 just in Delhi. Doctors said there has been a steep rise in swine flu cases this year, which might be due to prolonged winter or may be the virus which was always present in the environment is settling down, spreading panic among the masses.

The seasonal influenza is spread from human to human contact through droplets generated by a patient during coughing, sneezing and so on. There is no role of pigs or poultry in causing such episodes.

Accordingly, simple public health measures such as frequent hand washing, covering nose and mouth with tissue paper or handkerchief and avoiding crowded places can go a big way in preventing the disease.

Doctors in the capital said, ‘As we are in the midst of the outbreak, vaccination as a public health intervention is not recommended at this stage.’

 If people in extremes of age, pregnant women, people with morbid conditions such as diabetes, lung diseases, heart disease, liver disease, kidney disease, blood disorders, diabetes, neurological disorders, immune-compromised patients, those on long term corticosteroid therapy, cancer and AIDS patients come in contact with a case of seasonal influenza, they are advised to take Tamiflu as a precaution.

A senior doctor said, ‘32 out of 52 patients, who were confirmed positive for swine flu were found to be seeking treatment at home only, as their symptoms were milder. Their tests had been carried out at various path labs and rest of the patients were admitted at hospitals such as Safdarjung, Ram manohar Lohia, Sir Ganga Ram, Deen Dayal Upadhyay, and BLK at large.’
