SUV runs over three, one killed

The accused Satyaprakash (37), who is the driver of a Rohini-based doctor named Dr Sonia Jindal, was travelling in a white Tata Safari with his employer’s son. Both were drunk and heading towards Rohini, said a police official.

As narrated by a police official, the accused and his companion were approaching from the Mata Sundari Chowk, passing Raj Ghat and heading towards the doctor’s residence in Rohini. When they reached the Ring Road stretch near Shantivan,  the SUV hit the divider and its tyre burst, after which, Satyaprakash lost control.

The SUV then rammed into a pavement where three rickshaw-pullers were taking rest. After the crash, the vehicle overturned, with the driver and the doctor’s son trapped inside. They were pulled out through the window by police officials who reached the spot after receiving a PCR call around 11:15 pm. Both of them suffered minor injuries and soon after a test, Satyaprakash was found to be driving under the influence of alcohol, said a police official. He further said, a few cans of beer were also recovered from the vehicle.

All three victims were rushed to the LNJP hospital in Daryaganj, where Munna (60) was declared ‘brought dead’, Jaan Bahadur was admitted with his legs fractured and Munna Tiwari was admitted with some severe wound injuries, said Alok Kumar, Additional Commissioner of Police (central). He further said, while Munna Tiwari shall be discharged in a day or two, Jaan Bahadur is still in a critical condition.

Munna’s body has been sent for post-mortem and accused Satyaprakash has been booked under section 279, section 304A, section 337 and section 338 of the IPC and relevant sections of the Motor Vehicles Act. ‘However, by Thursday afternoon, the accused was released on bail,’ he added.

On Sunday night, one man was killed and 12 were severy injured after being crushed by an SUV, being driven by an east Delhi property dealer who was drunk, at Nigam Bodh Ghat area in north Delhi.

On the same night, one woman was killed and nine were severely injured after being hit by an SUV, whose inebriated driver lost control over the vehicle, at Indirapuram in Ghaziabad.

According to records of Delhi Traffic Police, more than 20000 people have been prosecuted for drunken driving so far in 2014. More than 10000 vehicles have been impounded and 7000-odd drivers have been arrested so far this year.
