Suspected criminal killed in Delhi highway shootout

A suspected criminal was killed in daylight shootout between a police team and five men on a national highway in the outskirts of Delhi Wednesday afternoon, the police said. The other four, including one bearing a reward on his head, were arrested.

The encounter took place near Palla red light on NH-1, at GT Karnal Road, Alipur, between gangster Manoj Morkheriya and the special team of the crime branch.

One alleged criminal died during the shootout and the other four have been arrested.

‘Five armed men in a Maruti Ritz car opened fire at a team of Delhi police’s crime branch officials, when they were asked to stop,’ said a police officer.

The police team fired back and managed to control the criminals in a few minutes.

‘One criminal, identified as Rakesh, died, while the other four have been arrested,’ said Additional Commissioner of Police Ravinder Yadav.

One of the arrested is Manoj Morkheri, a resident of Rohtak, for whom both the Haryana and Rajasthan police have announced a reward of Rs 1 lakh. He was wanted in abductions for ransom, extortion, attempt to murder cases and as well as for possession of arms in Delhi and Haryana.

According to the police officials, the operation took place based on a secret information received by the police team.
