Sushma’s sister enters poll fray with Modi ‘support’

Sources said, since August, Swaraj was reportedly pitching for her sister’s ticket from Safidon assembly constituency in Haryana and finally it was cleared on Saturday by the BJP’s Central Election Committee (CEC) after being ‘approved’ by Modi.

Over the months (before the Lok Sabha poll) Swaraj, who was very vocal among other party leaders in airing her reservations over Modi’s candidature put the BJP in an embarrassing situation with her comments against her colleagues, has managed to create a space among those who are close to the PM.

Party insiders claimed that PM has personally approved her request, while requests from other party leaders have been turned down. It was learnt that Union minister of state Rao Inderjit Singh wanted his daughter Aarti to be nominated from Rewari but another party leader Randheer Kaprivas was given the ticket.

Similarly, Union minister Krishanpal Gujjar pitched for his son Devender Singh from Tigaon seat but the ticket went to Rajesh Nagar. Banto Kataria, wife of Ambala MP Rattan Lal Kataria, wanted to contest from Nilokheri but her plea too was turned down and ticket was given to Bhagwan Das Kabirpanthi.

Union minister of state Gen VK Singh’s brother-in-law Aridaman Singh wanted a ticket from Sohna but his plea was turned down and ticket was given to another strong candidate Tejpal Tanwar. Karnal MP Ashwani Chopra’s wife Kiran Chopra wanted to contest from Karnal but it was given to Manoharlal Khattar.

Modi on Saturday chaired the BJP’s CEC to finalise the second list of candidates for the Haryana poll. Earlier, on 9 September, the BJP had declared names of 43 candidates in its first list out of total 90 assembly seats in Haryana. The CEC members also raised the issue of their severing ties with the Haryana Janhit Congress (HJC) and its possible impact in the local poll.

All the 15-CEC members including Union ministers Rajnath Singh, Sushma Swaraj, Arun Jaitley and Thawarchand Gehlot along with Madhya Pradesh chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan attended the meeting under the chairmanship of BJP chief Amit Shah.

Meanwhile, names of candidate for by-election to legislative assembly constituency were also announced by the CEC.
