Suggestions given for declaring eco-sensitive zone by ICFRE

Recently, in Uttarakhand, the declaration of Gaumukh to Uttarakshi along the Bhagirithi river as eco-sensitive zone created waves of protest. This resulted in a high-level meeting, which was held in the national capital by an  expert committe of Indian council of forestry research and and education (ICFRE). It suggested that the eco-sensitive zones should be declared only after deep scientific studies and discussion at all levels with the local people with regards to their livelihood and developmental needs.  A separate chapter on public appraisal should be included in the master plan in which all queries/objections/suggestions made by the people of the affected villages should be included along with the details of the action proposed to be taken or the recommendation of the state government.
