With the Delhi Police having no control over sudden provocation and trivial issues, a recent analysis of murder cases revealed that these two are the major motives behind murders. Last year, out of 541 cases of murder registered in Delhi, 16.64 per cent of the cases were due to sudden provocation or trivial issues.
While investigating murder cases registered throughout 2015, sudden provocation, trivial issues and old enmity were found to be the major causes resulting in murder cases. Delhi Police had done an analysis of the solved cases to study the motives behind the murders. It was after this analysis that the police reached at the aforementioned conclusion. The report reflected the change in temperament of people, which caused frequent fights and outbursts to vent out anger and vengeance.
Sharp-edged weapons were the mostly used weapons in the murder cases. In about 41 per cent of the total murder cases in 2015, sharp edged weapons were used to kill the person. In around 18 per cent of the murder cases, blunt objects were used and in 16 per cent cases the accused had strangulated the victim to death. Fire arms were used in 13 per cent of the murder incidents reported in Delhi.
Out of 541 cases reported in 2015, Delhi Police have managed to solve 76 per cent of the cases. “Incidents of murders per lakh of population have shown a significant decline during the last fourteen years. While this figure was 3.95 in the year 2001, it has come down to 3.12 in 2015,” reads the crime record of Delhi Police. In 2016, till January 15, as many as 15 cases of murder have been registered in various police stations.
