Subhash Arya set to become SDMC’s new standing committee chairman

‘I will do my best to fulfil the expectations of the people and party,’ said Arya after filing the nominations.

Earlier, BJP councillor Radhey Shyam Sharma was to be nominated for the post. But according to sources, senior RSS and BJP leaders put their weight behind Arya owing to his vast political experience and seniority. Radhey Shyam Sharma will now succeed Arya as the leader of the house in SDMC.

Arya (73). the senior-most councillor across the three corporation, has won five successive terms from Rajouri Garden ward.

Arya started his political career at the age of 17 when he was appointed as block secretary of Jansangh in 1958 and was general secretary of South Delhi district in 2004-05. He entered in electoral politics by winning the post of Metropolitan Councillor in 1983 which is parallel to MLA of the present time.

‘He is very experienced person and always tries to bring opposition together. I hope the corporation will serve the people better under his leadership,’ said Farhad Suri, leader of opposition in SDMC. Earlier, Congress used to field candidates for the post against BJP.  ‘We have just two members in committee as against BJP’s eight. Their is no sense of fielding a candidate,’ Suri added.
