Stun guns, rubber bullets passe, here comes pepper balls

Delhi Police are planning to buy a unique gun loaded with balls that are filled with the deadly pepper powder. Those balls will be filed in a magazine and with the help of the gun, policemen could set the target to control mobs.

On Friday, BS Bassi demonstrated few of them in a lawn at the Police Headquarters to experience the intensity and usefulness of the weapon. Three guns, TMT pistol, TMC-700 and TMC 4 Carbine were demonstrated by the police chief.

A senior police official said: ‘If the rounds are delivered on-target by a high pressure system of the gun, the round will unleash in a cloud of Capsaicin II powder into the face (eyes, nose and throat) of the aggressor. The irritant incapacitates them by powerfully stinging their eyes, causing non-fatal breathing difficulties, and creating other extreme but temporary discomfort.’

TMT pistol weighs 1.5 kg while TMC-700 is 4.9 pound and TMC 4 Carbine weighs 6.25 pound. TMT pistol is a semi automatic gun that has a target range of 60 feet. It can fire 8 rounds at one go.

TMC-700, on the other hand has the capacity to fire 160 rounds from a target range of 60 feet. In additional to it, TMC-700 has the ability to fire many pepper balls at one go. However, 200 rounds can be fired from TMC 4 Carbine from 60 feet.

The company that demonstrated the unique weapon to Delhi Police claimed that they do not penetrate skin or pose ricochet hazards, even when used from a close range. The pepper-shots burst on impact and fill the vicinity with the irritant powder. So, the policemen using the pistol often don’t have to hit their target to subdue the suspect. Rather, by shooting a hard surface in the suspect’s vicinity, the suspect will be overwhelmed by a cloud of irritation powder.

‘Even when the suspect is running away, the officer can shoot into a wall or object in front of the suspect, leaving the suspect running into a barely visible cloud of irritation powder,’ as told to police.
Presently, Delhi Police either use mild police force or fire tear gas and water cannons to disperse unruly mobs. They even own and use taser guns, also known as stun guns or shock guns,  rubber bullets to stop errant bikers.
