Students protest UGC’s June 2013 NET results

Student and teacher organisations from various varsities in Delhi sparked off demonstration against ‘unfair’ results of the University Grant Commission’s (UGC) National Eligibility Test (NET) held in June this year, on Thursday.

Members from Delhi University Students Union (DUSU), Jawaharlal Nehru Students University (JNUSU), Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) University, Delhi University Teachers Association (DUTA) demonstrated outside UGC headquarters at Bahadur Shah Jafar Marg near ITO at 11 am.

Ravi Kumar, a student and one of the protesters said, ‘We can’t accept it that thousands of students are the victims of this unfair result and their papers have been cancelled by the UGC because of adopting “unfair means” by examinees. But the UGC has not clearly stated the meaning of “unfair means”. This is the first case in the history of UGC, in which thousands of students have been disqualified for using whiteners, overwriting, drops of sweat falling on the answer sheet and use of erasers on the OMR copy, according to UGC authorities.’

UGC declared its results on 22 October, in which it was found that several students had been disqualified for ‘use of unfair means’.

As per the circular uploaded by UGC on website ‘Candidate who have not followed the instructions of UGC and have changed their responses by scratching or using white fluid were placed under the category of “Unfair Means” and their result were disqualified.’

The circular goes onto add, ‘However, a large number of students representing that disqualification clause were not specifically mentioned in the guidelines. It has now been decided to process such results by deducting the marks of those responses in answer sheets, which were changed due to use of scratching or using fluid. This decision will be applicable only to June 2013 exam.’
