Students left in the lurch as colleges wait for approval

As many as 500 students from various DU colleges with B.Tech courses protested for the same on Monday. “Our future is totally in the dark if the colleges doesn’t get AICTE approval. It would be very difficult for us to pursue our future studies if our B.Tech course is not approved. AICTE says colleges have not applied, officials says AICTE has not replied. Our problem is not taken up seriously by DU officials,” said a second year B.Tech student studying in varsity.

The four-year B.Tech programmes were launched as part of the Four-Year Undergraduate Programme (FYUP), which was scrapped last year after the intervention of UGC.

Later, UGC directed DU to continue with the five B.Tech programmes but only for the students admitted in the academic year 2013-2014. Also, the colleges were asked to seek AICTE approval.
“While AICTE has set February 20, 2015, as the last date for seeking approval, and DU is yet to put its act together. None of the five B.Tech courses introduced in 2013, in Computer Science, Electronics, Food Technology, Instrumentation Electronics and Polymer Science, have AICTE’s approval,” said Nandita Narain, president of Delhi University Teachers’ Association (DUTA).

Though the last date is approaching, the varsity is yet to take any effective action on the matter. “University will take up the matter with colleges and see why the approval has been delayed. The B.Tech course is a special one-time course and was modified according to UGC instructions,” said J M Khurana, Dean Students’ Welfare, Delhi University.
