Students from the Northeast lathicharged at Vijay Chowk

Protesters, organised under an umbrella organisation ‘Campaign against Racism’, comprised of several student bodies, formed a human chain in the area.

Demonstrators, who were initially protesting at Jantar Mantar, marched towards Central Secretariat metro station at around 2 pm. However, they were lathicharged and dispersed from the spot with some of the students running into the Metro station only to be followed by the police. A verbal confrontation between the CISF and Delhi police ensued, on matters of jurisdiction, following which 50-60 students were detained and taken to the Parliament Street police station.

‘We have to physically evict them. There was no lathicharge. If somebody is injured we will provide them first aid. We have detained 50 to 60 people, but they have violated section 144. We will see what legal action can be taken in this regard,’ deputy commissioner of police (New Delhi) SBS Tyagi told reporters.

However protestors alleged that they were beaten without any provocation. ‘We were raising slogans against racism and the police, without even talking to us, started hitting and chasing us into the metro station,’ said protester. He also claimed that CISF personnel came to their rescue.

Another protestor said, ‘Why are we being denied our right to protest, are we not equal?’
While police maintained that they did not resort to lathicharge they said the detention of students only took place because they were attempting to walk from Vijay Chowk to Rashtrapati Bhavan, where several dignitaries had gathered for a function. The police cordoned off Vijay Chowk after it was cleared.
