NEFIS (North-East Forum for International Solidarity) organised a demonstration on Friday consisting of around 200 people against the imposition of Hindi/Modern Indian Languages (MIL) upon the students of north-east India.
Students gathered at 2pm in front of the Vivekanand Statue in the Faculty of Arts complex of Delhi University and held a public meeting.
Delhi University, from the upcoming academic year will introduce a new syllabus, according to which, students across streams will compulsorily have to undergo a foundation course during the first year of their graduation, as part of which they would have to study either Hindi or one of the modern Indian languages.
Chinglen Khumukcham, NEFIS organiser said, 'Compulsory inclusion of Hindi and other MILs in the syllabus will cause immense hardships for the students who belong to communities that speak neither Hindi nor one of the MILs.’
