Defying laws against defacement of public places, Delhi University Students Union (DUSU) aspirants are openly pasting poll campaign posters in metro stations, subways, flyovers, overbridges and walls across the capital in the run up to the DUSU election.
Speaking to Millennium Post at the Sarita Vihar Metro station, Sakshi, a Delhi university student said, 'Members of National Students Union of India (NSUI) and the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) are openly flouting the norms of the DUSU elections. The polls become a money game or “satta of students”.
It's good that students are getting an exposure to politics through such elections, but more than a learning experience it has become a way to show-off their money for some.' She added, ‘The campaign posters pasted across the city clearly indicate that the candidates are spending more than the DU-approved budget of Rs 5,000 on campaigning for the DUSU elections.’
Another student said, 'The rivals have been busy for over a month now in wooing new students with posters carrying welcome messages and names of prospective candidates. As per the guidelines of the Lyngdoh Committee on student elections, candidates cannot deface and disfigure public property with posters. The students can use hand-painted posters for campaigning. Hundreds of posters have been pasted on college walls, lamp posts, subway and flyover walls, not just in and around the north and south campus, but at prominent intersections on the two Ring Roads.’
Sindhu Pillai, deputy commissioner of police, north, said: 'We have stepped up vigil near the north campus to ensure that students’ organisations do not violate any rules. Last week, we caught three persons who had been engaged in pasting posters. As the DUSU elections are approaching, we have beefed up security on the campus.'
Rohit Chaudhary, NSUI president said 'No one wants to run a poster campaign, but we are forced to do so. The colleges are spread across the city. Posters are the only way for us to reach out to students. The university should identify us specific areas in each college to put up posters.’
