Strongest possible action will be taken against those who try to disrupt communal harmony in the country, Home Minister Rajnath Singh said on Wednesday, days after a man was lynched in UP’s Dadri area of Greater Noida over beef-eating rumour.
“Be it the state government or the Central government, strongest possible action will be taken against those who try to break communal harmony in the country,” he said.
Iqlakh, 50, was attacked by a 200-strong mob at Dadri’s <g data-gr-id="21">Bisada</g> village after a public announcement made by a local temple that the family had slaughtered a calf and eaten its meat last Monday.
Singh had on Tuesday termed the lynching episode as “unfortunate” and appealed to the people to maintain communal harmony.
“It was an unfortunate incident. I appeal to every citizen to maintain communal harmony, which is everyone's responsibility," Singh had said.
Union Home Secretary Rajiv Mehrishi reiterated the Hime Minister’s directive and that the country would not tolerate any attempt aimed at harming the country’s the secular fabric. “Even as law and order is a state subject, but the Central government has asked for zero tolerance on issues that harm the secular fabric of the country,” Mehrishi said at RS Pura sector along the International Border (IB) in Jammu on Wednesday.
Mehrishi, who is on his maiden two-day visit to J&K, reviewed the security situation along the International Border at RS Pura sector, where he interacted with the jawans and officials of the Border Security Force (BSF).
He said that there was peace on the IB in the past one month and would want the peace to continue.
PM a sensitive person, seized of Dadri lynching incident: BJP
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Wednesday said Prime Minister Narendra Modi is seized of the Dadri lynching incident and should not be judged by “what he writes or doesn’t write on social media” as he is a “sensitive” person and would not be found wanting.
“Senior ministers of BJP, the Home Minister and the Finance Minister have both commented on the Dadri incident. The party has time and again commented on it. It is doing more than what is required to be done,” BJP secretary Siddharth Nath Singh said.
“At the same time, the PM is a sensitive person. He is seized of the matter. Do not judge him by what he writes or doesn't write on social media but what needs to be done by the central government you will never find the Prime Minister wanting,” he said.
Meanwhile, former J&K CM Omar Abdullah tweeted on Wednesday, targeting Modi’s silence on the issue. He said PM tweeted a “get well soon” message for ailing BJP MP Navjot Singh <g data-gr-id="58">Sidhu,</g> but has remained mum on the Dadri incident. “What does it say about our Hon PM that Sidhu’s DVT (blood clot) got more attention from him that #Ikhlaq’s cold blooded murder did!!!!,” tweeted the former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister.
