Streetlights off as Tata Power cuts off electricity supply to PWD

Streets maintained by Public Works Department (PWD) have been assigned to darkness as Tata Power Delhi Distribution Limited (TPDDL) has cut off the power connection has issued a notice asking PWD to clear the outstanding dues worth about Rs 8.9 crore.
‘PWD has defaulted on payment of electricity bills of streetlights in TPDDL-fed areas of north and north-west Delhi. PWD has not paid the bills to TPDDL since May 2013. As of date, a total of Rs 8.90 crore is outstanding,’ TPDDL’s spokesperson said.
The discom has been asking PWD to clear the since May last year and has written several letters requesting for an immediate release of the money in order to avoid any inconvenience to the residents of north and north-west Delhi. However, PWD dilly-dallying approach has resulted in the disconnection of streetlights in Ashok Vihar, Keshav Puram, Model Town, Shastri Nagar, Shalimar Bagh and Rohini areas.
‘Tata Power Delhi Distribution Limited is committed to proper functioning of streetlights in its area of distribution. We appeal to PWD to immediately release the outstanding dues to us considering the unnecessary inconvenience caused to lakhs of commuters and residents of North Delhi,’ the company spokesperson said.
