Story behind the mask

‘In all these years, my life and work has taken me to a completely different arena. Art has no age barrier, it’s something which only hits the heart,’ says storydancer Zuleikha. She is back to the Capital to entertain Delhiities with an evening of performance that includes dance, story and music.

The pieces she will present during her performance will deal with uplifting themes of joy, humour and peace. The performance is in collaboration with the World Buddhist Culture Trust.

As part of the 45-minute performance, Zuleikha will be narrating stories and dancing with a mask.

The stories will be culled from different traditions and cultures that merge the East with the West. So there will  be wisdom stories  from different mythologies.

One dance piece this time would be the Chuang Teu from China. What is it all about? ‘I want to keep it a secret for my audience,’ she says, smiling. ‘I will perform with different musical forms that will mix classical music with Western drums. I also have some surprises in my stock for the audience which I don’t want to reveal now,’ she adds.

The storydancer also trains cancer patients and is the  founder of an NGO, Can Support, through which she takes care of cancer patients and their families living in and around the Capital.

Zuleikha, who hails from the US, is an international performer, a wellness educator, and a teacher in the art of movement and story. She inspires dynamic creativity and rejuvenation through movement. Her training comes from years of intensive study with master teachers of healing and movement in both Eastern and Western traditions.

She grew up in a musical family, studying classical piano and flute. She worked for years with American dancer and avant garde choreographer Anna Halprin, the West Coast pioneer of natural movement.

The last time she performed in the city, it brought together myriad emotions. ‘The performance encapsulated comedy, grief, longing, silliness and the joy of being human,’ she informs. All of it came together through her beautiful, intelligent and hilarious presentations which was very well appreciated.

Zuleikha says she has been training in many traditions. What makes her unique is  the way in which she combines them all. From this extensive multicultural training, Zuleikha has created a unique movement language, which she draws from in all aspects of her work.

Catch her in action as she gears up to mesmerise the audience once again.
