Steps on to raise agri production: Uttarakhand govt

‘The harvest yield should be enhanced and latest techniques should be adopted for the same. The state should produce hybrid seeds and the agricultural land area should be increased,’ the chief secretary said while presiding over a meeting of the executive committee of the State Food Security Mission.

The difference between demand and home-production is widening, and the dependence on other states for vegetables and food products is weakening the economy of the state, he added.

He further said that the Pantnagar University Hybrid seed production should be encouraged. The technique of hybrid seeds should be transferred to the Terai Seed Development Corporation. He was told during the meeting that the targets of increased yield had been decided under the mission.

The production of rice had to be increased from 12.84 quintals to 13 Quintals per hectare. The production of wheat had to be increased from 13.85 quintal per hectare to 16.75 per hectare.

Districts like Haridwar, Pauri, Tehri, Udham Singh Nagar, Nainital, Almora and Pithoragarh districts had been identified for this task.

Cluster demonstration, seed distribution, micro-nutrient distribution, plant protection, distribution of farm implements for protection of crops, training programmes and water harvesting were being done to promote these objectives.
